The absence of batteries, radio components, and charging circuitry allows more of the bill of materials to go toward sound.

Modern console controllers preserve wired audio as a first-class option. The PlayStation 5 DualSense, Xbox controllers, and Nintendo's Switch 2 Pro Controller all include 3.5mm jacks. While the controller itself connects wirelessly to the console - introducing a small latency step - the delay is negligible compared to Bluetooth, and can be further reduced by connecting the controller via USB during play.

Wired models continue to dominate tournament and professional settings, where consistency trumps convenience. Bluetooth-only gaming headsets, meanwhile, have largely disappeared from serious gaming lineups - a tacit acknowledgment that the protocol's strengths lie elsewhere.

The broader implication is that wireless audio for gaming has split into two paths. Consumer Bluetooth serves casual and mobile use, while dedicated 2.4GHz solutions address the demands of performance-focused players. As codec technology improves and device support matures, Bluetooth may eventually close the gap.
