Sennheiser introduced its Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds this week, and the headline feature is not a new codec or a bigger driver. It is a Phillips-head screw. Both the earbuds and their charging case now ship with user-replaceable batteries, a design decision that cuts against a decade of sealed-shut consumer electronics. According to Sennheiser, the swap takes minutes and requires only a small screwdriver.

The company redesigned the earbud chassis to reduce pressure points. The case has also been slimmed down, trading the slightly bulbous profile of the fourth generation for a narrower, more pocket-friendly enclosure.

The True Wireless 5 employs Sennheiser's 7mm TrueResponse transducer, a dynamic driver the company has refined across multiple product cycles. Audio streams over Bluetooth 6.0, which supports bitrates up to 24-bit/96kHz when paired with compatible source devices. That is overkill for most streaming services, which top out at 16-bit/44.1kHz or use lossy codecs, but it future-proofs the hardware for lossless libraries and emerging formats.
Head-tracking accelerometers enable spatial audio, a feature that has migrated from niche to expected in flagship earbuds. Sennheiser's implementation works with compatible apps and services, though the company has not specified which platforms are supported at launch. Voice calls benefit from an AI-driven speech enhancement algorithm that isolates the wearer's voice from ambient noise. The specifics of the model, whether it runs on-device or in the cloud, and how it handles wind or traffic noise remain unclear. AI processing in call audio has improved significantly in the past two years, but it can still introduce artifacts or latency under challenging conditions.
The Repairability Calculation
The decision to make batteries user-replaceable carries trade-offs. It adds mechanical complexity, requires tighter manufacturing tolerances to maintain water resistance, and introduces potential failure points in the form of connectors and fasteners. Sennheiser has not published an IP rating for the True Wireless 5, and the absence of that specification is conspicuous. Most competitors in this price bracket offer at least IPX4 splash resistance.
Replacement battery availability will determine whether this feature delivers on its promise. If Sennheiser stocks batteries for five years and prices them reasonably, the True Wireless 5 could outlast two or three generations of sealed competitors. Sennheiser does not have the vertical integration of Apple or the consumer electronics breadth of Sony, so it must compete on audio fidelity, build quality, and now, serviceability.
Whether swappable batteries become a differentiator or a footnote will depend on execution. If the process is genuinely simple, if batteries remain in stock, and if the earbuds hold up across thousands of charge cycles, Sennheiser may have found a wedge in a crowded market. If any of those conditions fail, the True Wireless 5 will be remembered as a well-intentioned experiment rather than a turning point.
