Stripe announced Wednesday it has closed its purchase of OpenRouter, the developer-focused AI gateway that routes requests across multiple large language models. The price, according to sources familiar with the transaction speaking to the New York Times, came in at $7.5 billion - a figure that represents a remarkable sixfold increase over the startup's $1.3 billion valuation just three months earlier in May. To put the economics in perspective, OpenRouter's founding team is set to pocket $1.5 billion from the exit, a sum exceeding the company's entire worth at its previous funding round. The rapid valuation climb underscores the intensity of competition for AI infrastructure assets. Why a Payments Company Buys a Model Router

Leverage Over the AI Supply Chain
The strategic value extends beyond expense tracking. OpenRouter's position in the stack gives Stripe insight into demand patterns across different models and providers. If a significant portion of enterprise AI traffic flows through Stripe-owned infrastructure, the company can influence pricing, service-level agreements, and partnership terms. The hyperscalers - Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure - have built their businesses on this aggregation model, sitting between enterprises and compute resources. Stripe now has a foothold in a parallel dynamic for AI model access, potentially positioning itself as the intermediary between enterprises and the labs producing frontier models.
Developer Overlap and Internal Benefits
The Collison brothers pointed out in their investor letter that OpenRouter and Stripe share overlapping customer bases. Both serve developers, and Stripe has long positioned itself as a developer-first platform. Integrating OpenRouter's capabilities directly into Stripe's offerings could unlock new product possibilities - agentic billing systems, AI-powered fraud detection that dynamically selects the best model for each transaction, or automated financial workflows that adapt based on model performance.
Even using OpenRouter internally will likely generate substantial efficiency gains. Stripe operates at enormous scale, processing hundreds of billions of dollars in transactions annually. Any AI-driven improvements to fraud detection, customer support, or operational automation compound across that volume. Having direct access to a model-agnostic routing layer allows Stripe's engineering teams to experiment more freely, optimize costs more aggressively, and avoid vendor lock-in with any single AI provider.
Independence and Integration
OpenRouter has stated publicly that it will continue operating independently following the deal's close, expected within a few weeks. Its product, mission, and existing commitments will remain unchanged, according to the startup's own announcement. This approach mirrors Stripe's handling of previous acquisitions, where purchased companies often retain their brand and operational autonomy while gradually integrating backend systems and go-to-market strategies.
The independence promise serves multiple purposes. It reassures OpenRouter's existing customers, many of whom may compete with Stripe in adjacent markets or have concerns about data sharing.
