A vulnerability in macOS screen sharing that permits attackers to execute arbitrary code has moved from theoretical threat to active campaign. Security authorities in the Netherlands observed intrusions across multiple systems in recent days, all following the same pattern: attackers gained root-level privileges and deployed Monero mining software.

The flaw resides in the state management component of macOS screen sharing, a built-in feature that enables remote parties to view displays and control input devices when machines are powered on. State management tracks user interactions, variables, and system events; when that tracking breaks down, it can create openings for unauthorized commands. In this case, the breakdown allowed external actors to bypass authentication and seize administrative control.

According to the Netherlands National Cyber Security Centrum, every compromised machine shared a common exposure: port 5900, the default channel for screen sharing traffic, was reachable from the public internet. That configuration turns a convenience feature into an attack surface, and the NCSC notification confirms that adversaries have begun scanning for and exploiting it.

Patch Issued, but Adoption Lags

Apple released fixes for the vulnerability, designated CVE-2026-65400, across three macOS versions: Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma. The company assigned the issue a severity score of 7.1 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System, a rating that sits in the high-severity band but falls short of critical. That middle-ground classification may explain why some administrators have not yet prioritized the update, even as evidence of exploitation mounts.

The Port 5900 Problem

Screen sharing listens on TCP port 5900 by default, a well-known convention inherited from the VNC protocol. When that port is exposed to the internet without additional authentication layers or network segmentation, any vulnerability in the screen-sharing service becomes remotely exploitable. The NCSC advisory makes clear that the compromised systems all had this exposure in common, suggesting that attackers used automated scanning to identify targets rather than conducting targeted reconnaissance.

Many users enable screen sharing for legitimate remote-support scenarios, then forget to disable it or fail to restrict access through firewall rules. In enterprise and academic environments, misconfigured network policies can leave entire subnets reachable from outside, and macOS devices in those subnets inherit the risk. The current campaign underscores the operational security principle that any service exposed to the public internet must be treated as a potential vector, regardless of the operating system's reputation for security.

Implications for Device Management

The incident arrives at a moment when Apple's enterprise footprint in the region is expanding. Organizations in Singapore, Seoul, and Hong Kong have increased Mac deployments in creative, development, and executive tiers, often managed through mobile-device-management platforms that can enforce configuration baselines. Yet MDM adoption remains uneven, and smaller firms or remote teams may rely on manual updates and ad hoc security practices.

For IT administrators, the immediate action is to verify that port 5900 is not exposed to untrusted networks and to confirm that the latest macOS patches have been applied. Longer term, the episode is a reminder that built-in convenience features carry trade-offs. Screen sharing, file sharing, and remote login all extend the attack surface; each should be enabled only when necessary and protected by strong authentication, preferably supplemented by VPN or zero-trust network access.

From a threat-modeling perspective, the shift from theoretical vulnerability to active exploitation also signals that macOS is no longer a niche target. As market share grows in Asia and globally, adversaries are investing in tooling and reconnaissance for Apple platforms. The days when Mac users could rely on obscurity as a de facto defense are over, and security postures must adapt accordingly.

What Comes Next

The NCSC has not disclosed how many systems were compromised or whether the attackers used the initial access for anything beyond crypto mining. That uncertainty is itself a risk: a foothold established for mining can be repurposed for data theft, ransomware deployment, or supply-chain pivots if the attacker decides the target is valuable enough. Organizations that discover evidence of compromise should treat the incident as more than a performance nuisance and conduct a full forensic review.

Apple's patch closes the immediate vulnerability, but the broader lesson is about configuration hygiene and the principle of least exposure. Every internet-facing service is a potential entry point, and every entry point must be justified, monitored, and hardened. For macOS administrators, that means auditing remote-management features, enforcing network segmentation, and ensuring that patch cycles keep pace with disclosure timelines. The current campaign may have started with a state management bug, but it succeeded because of operational gaps that no patch can fix on its own.
