LinkedIn members can now flag content they believe is artificially generated and low-quality through a new reporting option labeled "Seems like AI slop." The feature, rolled out this week, represents the Microsoft-owned professional network's most visible acknowledgment yet that synthetic content has reached critical mass on its platform.

Chief product officer Hari Srinivasan framed the move as a response to member frustration. Users arrive expecting to engage with real professionals sharing genuine expertise, he noted, but instead encounter an increasing volume of machine-written posts that lack substance or authentic perspective. The reporting button serves dual purposes: it gives members immediate agency, and it generates training data that LinkedIn will use to refine its content-classification models.

The challenge is familiar across the industry. The company has deployed new classifiers designed to identify not just overtly synthetic posts but also low-effort content that may blend human and machine authorship.

These classifiers will influence what members see in suggested content feeds, particularly recommendations drawn from outside their immediate network. By reducing the distribution of flagged or algorithmically identified slop, LinkedIn aims to restore signal to a feed that has grown noisier as generative tools have proliferated. The reporting button feeds directly into this loop: each flag helps calibrate the models, creating a feedback mechanism that should, in theory, improve accuracy over time.

LinkedIn is also introducing private notifications for users whose posts are frequently flagged as inauthentic. Rather than penalizing these accounts outright, the company is betting that transparency will encourage course correction. The assumption is that some users rely on AI to polish their writing rather than to fabricate entire posts, and that gentle nudges may preserve the human voice beneath the machine edits.

Pulling Back Its Own Tools

Notably, LinkedIn is retiring its "enhance your post" feature, which used generative models to rewrite user drafts. The replacement is a proofreading tool that corrects errors without altering tone or structure. The shift is telling: LinkedIn is drawing a line between assistance and substitution, signaling that it values editorial control over algorithmic convenience.

This decision aligns with broader platform anxiety about complicity. If a network provides tools that encourage synthetic content, it undermines its own moderation efforts. By pivoting to proofreading, LinkedIn can still offer utility to non-native English speakers and time-pressed professionals without enabling the mass production of generic posts that erode trust.

The company is also expanding access to verification badges for profiles and company pages, a move designed to help members distinguish credible accounts from bots or impersonators. And it is introducing granular blocking options that let users mute comments from specific company pages, addressing a common complaint about promotional spam disguised as engagement.

Industry Context

LinkedIn's moves arrive amid a cascade of similar interventions. Newsletter platform Substack recently partnered with Pangram, a content-authenticity startup, to surface indicators when articles are machine-generated. Pangram announced nine million dollars in new funding this week, underscoring investor belief that provenance and authenticity will be competitive differentiators in the next phase of online publishing.

The stakes are high. Digg shut down its Reddit competitor in March after failing to manage bot activity, a cautionary tale for any platform hoping to build community around user-generated content. Cloudflare reported that bot traffic now exceeds human requests on the web, a milestone reached earlier than the infrastructure firm had anticipated. The implication is that platforms face an adversarial environment where synthetic activity is the default, and human participation is the exception that must be actively protected.

The Limits of Member Reporting

Relying on user reports introduces its own complications. Members may flag content they simply disagree with, or posts written by non-native speakers whose phrasing feels unnatural. LinkedIn will need to weigh these signals carefully to avoid penalizing legitimate users or entrenching biases. The company has not disclosed how many flags are required to trigger action, nor how it will adjudicate disputes when authors contest their classifications.

There is also the question of scale. If hundreds of thousands of automated comments are blocked daily, the volume of synthetic posts likely runs into the millions. Member reporting, even at high participation rates, may not generate sufficient signal to train models across that entire distribution. LinkedIn will need to continue investing in automated detection, using the button as a supplement rather than a primary defense.

What Comes Next

The professional network's challenge is to maintain the norms that made it valuable in the first place: credible expertise, transparent career narratives, and substantive discussion. Generative models threaten those norms not because they produce text, but because they enable effortless production at a scale that drowns out careful thought. LinkedIn's response, measured and multi-pronged, reflects an understanding that this is a systems problem requiring both technical and social interventions.

Other platforms will watch closely. If LinkedIn's combination of user reporting, automated classifiers, and private feedback succeeds in restoring authenticity, expect similar playbooks to proliferate. If it fails, the industry may need to consider more aggressive measures, from mandatory disclosure labels to outright bans on synthetic content in certain contexts.

For now, the button is live, and the experiment is underway. Whether members will use it, and whether their signals will improve the feed, remains to be seen. But the mere presence of the feature sends a message: LinkedIn recognizes the problem, and it is willing to empower its community to push back.
