The company even developed its own lightweight voice assistant, though its capabilities remain narrowly scoped to playback control: skip tracks, adjust volume, name a song.

That neutrality has been a selling point for buyers wary of locking into a single ecosystem. It has also been a constraint. While Amazon and Google subsidize Echo and Nest hardware to drive adoption of their broader platforms, Sonos has had to compete on audio quality and design alone, often at price points two or three times higher. The Regional Dimension: Why Asia Matters More Than Ever

Voice assistants are notoriously hard to get right. Apple's Siri and Google Assistant, despite massive investment, still frustrate users with misheard commands and irrelevant responses. Sonos is attempting this with a fraction of their resources and a customer base that has already been burned once.

There's also the question of differentiation. If Sonos leans heavily on third-party models like those from OpenAI or Anthropic, what stops Amazon or Google from offering similar functionality at half the price? If it builds proprietary features, can it do so fast enough to stay ahead of competitors who have larger engineering teams and deeper integration into mobile operating systems?

The most promising path, in our view, is to focus on the audio quality and spatial intelligence that have always been Sonos strengths. A system that can run multiple simultaneous voice sessions across rooms, distinguish between speakers even in noisy environments, and deliver high-fidelity sound while processing commands would be genuinely differentiated. Pair that with strict data privacy commitments and local processing where possible, and Sonos could carve out a defensible position among users who want smart home convenience without surrendering their data to big tech platforms.

What We'll Be Watching in September

The September event will reveal whether Sonos has learned from its stumbles or is repeating them. Key questions include: Will the AI features require a subscription, adding recurring revenue but risking user backlash? Which voice models will power the system, and will they run on-device or in the cloud? What new hardware categories, if any, will Sonos introduce beyond speakers and soundbars? And perhaps most critically, how stable and reliable will the software be at launch?

Conrad has framed this moment as the culmination of twenty years of work, positioning Sonos as uniquely equipped to bring AI into the living room.
