That was seven years ago. Today's foldable landscape looks radically different. Samsung ships millions of Z Fold and Z Flip units quarterly. Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor have introduced competitive hardware across Asia. Motorola revived the Razr brand with a clamshell form factor that appeals to nostalgia and pragmatism in equal measure. Huawei's Mate X series commands premium pricing in China despite geopolitical headwinds. The category has moved from spectacle to product line.

This transition - from bleeding-edge risk to iterative refinement - mirrors the conditions under which Apple historically enters established categories. The company did not pioneer MP3 players, smartphones, smartwatches, or wireless earbuds. It waited until core technology stabilized, supply chains matured, and competitors revealed which design choices resonated. Then it shipped a polished version that integrated tightly with its ecosystem.

What Changed on the Hardware Side

Early foldables suffered from three interrelated problems: hinge durability, screen longevity, and ingress protection. Samsung's first-generation Fold used a complex multi-cam hinge that allowed dust intrusion. The ultra-thin glass layer atop the flexible OLED was prone to cracking under repeated stress. Water resistance was non-existent.

By 2024, these issues had largely been solved through iterative engineering. Modern hinges incorporate brush seals and tighter tolerances. Screen protection layers now use hybrid polymer-glass composites that survive tens of thousands of fold cycles in accelerated testing. Samsung introduced IPX8 water resistance on the Z Fold 3, and competitors followed. Crease visibility remains, but it no longer correlates with structural failure.

Supply chain maturity is equally important. Samsung Display and BOE have scaled flexible OLED production to the point where panel yields are high enough to support mass-market pricing. Component costs have dropped as hinge mechanisms and specialized batteries move from boutique fabrication to established production lines. Apple's typical supplier qualification process - multi-year validation, dual-sourcing requirements, volume commitments - becomes viable only when the supply base reaches this level of stability.

Software Finally Caught Up

Hardware reliability was necessary but insufficient. Foldables demanded new interaction paradigms: app continuity when switching between folded and unfolded states, multi-window workflows on tablet-sized screens, adaptive UI that responds to intermediate fold angles. Early Android implementations were inconsistent. Developers treated foldable support as an afterthought. Users encountered apps that stretched awkwardly or refused to reflow.

Google addressed this through a multi-year effort to bake foldable support into Android itself. The platform now includes native APIs for flex mode, window size classes, and activity embedding. Jetpack libraries provide developers with tools to handle configuration changes gracefully. Material Design 3 guidelines incorporate foldable-specific patterns. As a result, third-party apps increasingly work well on foldables without device-specific tweaks.

This matters for Apple because iOS has never supported foldable form factors. Introducing a foldable iPhone or iPad requires either extending iPadOS multitasking paradigms to a dual-screen context or inventing new interaction models. The existence of mature Android patterns - and the competitive pressure they create - reduces the risk of Apple's own software investment. The category has established conventions; Apple can refine rather than pioneer.

The Ecosystem Lock-In Advantage

Apple's strength has never been first-mover hardware. It lies in vertical integration: seamless handoff between devices, iCloud synchronization, services revenue, and the gravitational pull of the App Store. A foldable iPhone would slot into this ecosystem as another form factor, not a standalone bet.

Consider the use case: a device that functions as a standard iPhone when folded and expands into an iPad-class screen for reading, video, or light productivity. This directly addresses the question of whether a user needs both an iPhone and an iPad - a question Apple has historically answered by selling both. A foldable collapses that decision into a single, premium-priced device. Margins on a foldable iPhone would likely exceed those on separate iPhone and iPad purchases for users who choose one over two devices, especially when services and AppleCare attach rates are factored in.

Moreover, Apple's competitor set in foldables would be narrow. Samsung dominates the category outside China; other Android manufacturers have limited presence in North America and Europe. A foldable iPhone would compete primarily against Samsung's flagship Fold series and, to a lesser extent, against Microsoft's Surface Duo successor if one materializes. The competitive landscape is far less crowded than the traditional smartphone market.

Timing and Market Signals

Apple has not confirmed foldable development, but supply chain signals are accumulating. The company has filed patents covering hinge mechanisms, flexible display protection, and thermal management in foldable enclosures. Reports from Korean and Chinese display industry sources suggest Apple has ordered prototype flexible OLED panels from Samsung Display and LG Display for testing. These activities align with Apple's typical three-to-five-year product development cycle.

Market conditions also favor entry. Foldable unit sales are growing faster than the broader smartphone market, albeit from a small base. IDC estimates foldable shipments will exceed twenty million units annually by 2026, with growth concentrated in premium price tiers where Apple operates. Carrier subsidies in the US have made foldables more accessible, reducing sticker shock for consumers considering devices priced above $1,500.

Equally important, the initial hype has faded. Foldables are no longer treated as futuristic novelties that draw crowds at trade shows. They are simply another category of smartphone, evaluated on the same criteria as any other: performance, battery life, camera quality, software support. This normalization removes the pressure to deliver a revolutionary product. Apple can ship a foldable that is iteratively better - thinner, more reliable, better integrated - without needing to redefine the category.

What Apple Might Build

Speculation centers on two form factors. The first is a clamshell design similar to Samsung's Z Flip, which folds vertically into a compact square. This form factor appeals to users prioritizing pocketability and style over screen real estate. It also offers a lower entry price, potentially opening foldables to a broader audience.

The second is a horizontal book-style fold akin to the Z Fold, which unfolds into a near-square tablet. This design targets productivity users and media consumers willing to pay a premium for a device that replaces both phone and tablet. Given Apple's positioning, a book-style foldable seems more aligned with the company's ecosystem strategy and margin expectations.

Either way, differentiation will come from integration, not hardware novelty. Expect a foldable iPhone to leverage the M-series chip architecture for desktop-class performance in iPadOS mode, ultra-low-latency Pencil support if the flexible display can accommodate it, and deep hooks into Continuity features like Universal Control and Handoff. The device will likely ship with a redesigned Home Screen that adapts to folded and unfolded states without requiring user intervention.

The Risk of Waiting Too Long

Apple's strategy of entering mature categories has historically worked, but it carries risk. Waiting too long allows competitors to define user expectations and lock in ecosystems. Samsung has spent seven years refining foldable software, building developer relationships, and training customers on new interaction patterns. If foldables become a substantial share of the premium smartphone market before Apple enters, the company risks ceding leadership in a category it once could have shaped.

There is also the question of innovation perception. Apple has faced criticism in recent years for iterative iPhone updates that offer modest year-over-year improvements. A foldable device would provide a tangible narrative of innovation, a visible departure from the slab form factor that has dominated smartphones for over a decade. Delaying entry forfeits that narrative to competitors.

Finally, China remains a wildcard. Domestic brands like Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi have embraced foldables aggressively, and the form factor is gaining traction among Chinese consumers. Apple's iPhone market share in China has declined as local competitors offer feature-rich devices at competitive prices. A foldable iPhone could help Apple differentiate in a market where it is losing ground, but only if it arrives before the category matures into a commodity.

The Boring Revolution

The most compelling argument for an imminent Apple foldable is that the category has become boring. Hinge mechanisms work. Screens survive daily use. Software handles transitions gracefully. Prices are dropping toward flagship smartphone levels. The technology has exited the experimental phase and entered the product-management phase - precisely the moment when Apple's operational discipline and ecosystem leverage become decisive advantages.

Foldables may never replace traditional smartphones entirely, but they do not need to. They need only to carve out a defensible segment of the premium market, one where Apple can command margins and deepen customer lock-in. The conditions for that scenario are now in place. Whether Apple capitalizes on them depends on internal timelines we can only infer from patent filings and supply chain whispers. But the market is ready. The technology is ready. And if history is any guide, Apple is watching closely.
