SpaceX Revenue Surges 92% as Cloud Rental Pivot Rescues Struggling AI Division
The rocket company's unexpected shift to renting data center capacity to Anthropic and Google helped mask years of setbacks in its own AI ambitions.

The Pivot That Paid Off
SpaceX recorded $7.8 billion in revenue during the second quarter of 2026, up 92% from $4 billion in the same period last year, according to the company's first quarterly disclosure since its historic public offering. The growth came from an unexpected direction: rather than competing head-to-head with frontier AI labs, SpaceX quietly became a landlord for them.
The company's AI division contributed nearly $2 billion of the quarter's growth, almost entirely from infrastructure rental agreements rather than selling proprietary models or services. Starlink satellite internet added another $1.7 billion to the top line. Losses narrowed to $541 million from $1 billion a year earlier.

CFO Bret Johnsen told investors Tuesday that SpaceX holds an additional $6.7 billion in cloud services contracts set to ramp starting in October. The deals with Anthropic and Google, announced weeks before the IPO, represent a strategic retreat from model development into infrastructure provision. Both customers needed compute capacity quickly; SpaceX had two large facilities in Tennessee that were underutilized.
"The incremental revenue from new hosting deals generated high incremental EBITDA margins as we monetized available compute capacity," Johnsen said. Translation: the capital was already sunk, so every dollar from rentals flows nearly straight to the bottom line.
The arrangement highlights a broader tension in the AI stack. Hyperscalers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud have long dominated infrastructure. But specialist providers with purpose-built clusters can offer lower latency and dedicated throughput, advantages that matter for training runs and high-volume inference. SpaceX accidentally positioned itself in this niche not through strategy but through necessity.
The Cursor Bet and the $100 Billion Question
Johnsen projected that once SpaceX fully integrates Cursor, the AI coding assistant it recently acquired, the company will hit a $100 billion annualized revenue run rate by December. That figure represents a fivefold increase from the $18.67 billion SpaceX reported for all of 2025.
Musk went further, saying the $100 billion mark is "not a question mark" and suggested the number could be higher. The confidence rests on contracted cloud deals, Starlink subscriber additions, and hoped-for synergies from Cursor. Whether Cursor's developer tooling can scale to enterprise remains untested. The acquisition itself signals SpaceX sees more value in vertical applications than in competing with frontier labs on general-purpose models.
Capital expenditure has accelerated sharply. SpaceX spent more than $28 billion in the first half of 2026, up from $7 billion in the same stretch of 2025. Much of that outlay funds Starlink constellation expansion and data center buildout. The company raised over $85 billion in its IPO and now holds a $100 billion cash reserve following a post-IPO bond sale, giving it room to sustain heavy spending even as it bleeds operationally.
IPO Hangover
SpaceX debuted in June 2026 at a $1.75 trillion valuation, the largest public offering on record. Shares opened at $135 and briefly lifted the company's market cap above Amazon's. Two months later, the stock closed Tuesday just above $125 and dropped another 8% in after-hours trading following the earnings release.
The gap between debut euphoria and current sentiment reflects investor concern over profitability timelines and execution risk. SpaceX is burning capital at a pace that requires either rapid revenue acceleration or a willingness to tolerate losses for quarters to come. The cloud rental deals buy time, but they also underscore that SpaceX's AI ambitions have yet to translate into a competitive product business.
What the Rental Model Reveals
The shift from AI product company to infrastructure lessor is pragmatic, but it narrows SpaceX's strategic optionality. Anthropic and Google are customers today; they could also become competitors or simply churn off once they secure their own capacity. Contracts help, but lock-in in cloud infrastructure is notoriously weak outside the hyperscaler ecosystems.

SpaceX's Q2 results reveal a company in transition. The AI unit that was supposed to challenge OpenAI has become a data center operator. Starlink is growing, but not fast enough on its own to hit the $100 billion run rate Musk projects. The Cursor acquisition is a bet that vertical AI tooling can drive enterprise adoption where general models have not.
The fundamentals are straightforward: SpaceX has revenue growth, narrowing losses, contracted backlog, and a fortress balance sheet. It also has a CEO prone to aggressive timelines, a business model that remains unproven at scale, and a stock price that suggests investors are waiting for proof of concept. The next six months will test whether the cloud rental pivot was a clever use of stranded assets or a temporary patch on a flawed strategy.
