Last year, every startup wanted to reinvent search. This year, the survivors are chasing a different prize: turning repetitive knowledge work into scheduled tasks that run themselves.

Polar, a new browser startup, emerged from stealth with $5.7 million in seed capital led by Madrona. The company's founding team includes Kevin Jiang, who previously built features at Perplexity. But Polar's pitch diverges sharply from the consumer-facing AI browsers that dominated 2025. Instead of promising to help users book flights or chat with web pages, Polar targets sales teams, recruiters, and operations managers who need to automate repetitive workflows across logged-in web services.

The Browser Company sold to Atlassian, narrowing its Dia product to productivity niches. Firefox faced backlash for embedding AI features, even with an opt-out. The pattern is clear: general-purpose AI browsing for consumers hasn't found product-market fit. Polar is betting that narrow, task-oriented automation for professionals will.

Scheduled Workflows Over Chat Interfaces

Polar's core interface lets users define multi-step workflows, save prompt templates, and assign tasks to agents that execute based on open browser tabs. A recruiter might schedule a daily scrape of LinkedIn profiles matching specific criteria, then route the results into a spreadsheet. A marketer could automate competitor pricing checks across a dozen SaaS homepages every morning.

The browser itself is free. Users receive a daily allotment of AI task credits; those who exhaust the cap can subscribe starting at $20 per month for higher limits, according to Polar. The startup reports that most early adopters use Polar alongside a traditional browser, treating it as an automation layer rather than a daily driver for all web activity.

That usage pattern reveals Polar's real ambition: it wants to own the automation job, not the entire browsing experience. The browser form factor offers two advantages. First, it provides native access to the DOM and user session state, making it easier to interact with logged-in services like CRMs, applicant tracking systems, and internal dashboards. Second, it captures behavioral data about how professionals navigate repetitive tasks, which can inform agent design.

Why Knowledge Work, Why Now

Jiang's thesis rests on frequency. Consumer tasks like booking travel or making restaurant reservations happen sporadically. Professional workflows repeat daily or hourly, creating sustained demand for automation. Sales development representatives send dozens of outreach emails. Recruiters screen hundreds of profiles. Operations analysts pull data from multiple SaaS tools to assemble reports. These loops are high-volume, rules-based, and logged-in, making them ideal candidates for browser agents.

Sabrina Albert, a partner at Madrona, described the knowledge-worker automation market as expansive but technically difficult. Building reliable agents for the open web requires handling authentication, navigating inconsistent page structures, and recovering gracefully from errors. A browser provides control over the execution environment, session management, and user context in ways that external automation tools cannot replicate.

The seed round also drew participation from former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke, Modal CEO Erik Bernhardsson, and a handful of founders from Phia, Flapping Airplanes, Etched, and Fundamental Research Labs. That roster suggests investor confidence in both the market opportunity and the technical complexity of the problem.

The Agent Shift in Context

Polar's launch arrives amid a broader industry pivot toward agentic systems. Startups like Strawberry, Browser Use, and Aside are building similar tools with varying degrees of autonomy. Even Perplexity's Comet browser, which Jiang helped develop, has shifted toward agent-based features after its initial search-centric release.

The difference lies in target user and business model. Consumer-facing AI browsers struggled to monetize because usage remained occasional. Enterprise-focused automation tools can charge per seat or per task, aligning revenue with the value delivered. Polar's freemium model with credit-based pricing mirrors the consumption economics of cloud infrastructure, a pattern that has proven durable in developer and operations tooling.

Polar has also signaled openness to expanding beyond the browser. Jiang noted that the company views the browser as the most practical interface for automation today, but it is exploring adjacent surfaces like desktop-level computer use. That flexibility suggests Polar is building a workflow engine first and a browser second.

Risks and Open Questions

Polar inherits the challenges that sank earlier AI browser ventures. Reliability remains the central problem: agents must execute tasks correctly across thousands of website variations, authentication flows, and edge cases. A single failure in a daily workflow erodes trust faster than ten successful runs build it.

The logged-in web also poses data security and compliance risks. Polar's agents operate inside user sessions, accessing credentials and proprietary data. Enterprises will demand granular permissioning, audit logs, and guarantees that sensitive information never leaves their control. Polar has not yet disclosed its security architecture or compliance certifications, which will become table stakes as it moves upmarket.

Competition is intensifying. Robotic process automation incumbents like UiPath and Automation Anywhere are adding AI capabilities. Horizontal productivity platforms like Notion and Airtable are embedding workflow automation. Polar must prove that a browser-native approach delivers meaningfully better results than these alternatives.

Finally, the business model assumes that knowledge workers will tolerate yet another tool in their stack. Polar's current users treat it as a side app, which limits engagement and switching costs. To become indispensable, Polar needs to surface insights or unlock workflows that justify opening a second browser every day.

What Comes Next

Polar's seed round gives it runway to refine its agent engine and expand beyond early adopters. The company's success will hinge on execution in three areas: reliability, enterprise readiness, and workflow breadth. If Polar can automate a dozen high-frequency tasks reliably, it has a path to recurring revenue. If it cannot, it will join the list of AI browser casualties.

The broader lesson is that AI-native interfaces succeed or fail based on frequency and specificity. Consumers didn't need an AI browser because they already had tools for occasional tasks. Knowledge workers might, if the automation is reliable enough to trust and frequent enough to matter. Polar is testing that hypothesis with $5.7 million and a narrow wedge. The next twelve months will reveal whether the market agrees.
