Google Lets Creators Drop the Visible Watermark While Keeping Invisible Tracking Intact
The tech giant now offers a toggle to remove visual stamps from AI-generated media, banking on invisible SynthID and C2PA metadata to maintain transparency.
The Shift to Optional Visual Stamps
Google has introduced a new setting that allows users to remove visible watermarks from content generated by its AI models, including images, videos, and music. The toggle, rolling out across Gemini and the company's video editor Flow, marks a departure from mandatory visual labeling while maintaining invisible tracking mechanisms beneath the surface.
According to Josh Woodward, VP for Gemini at Google, the feature will be available for three model families: Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria. Users will find the control buried in Settings under Media Watermark, where they can switch the visible mark on or off. Search integration is expected to follow in the coming weeks.
The change addresses a persistent friction point for professionals and creators who use AI tools in production workflows. Visible watermarks, while transparent, often degrade the usability of generated assets in client-facing projects, marketing materials, and polished creative work. Woodward emphasized that users will still be able to verify AI origins through Gemini or Google Search, even when the visible watermark is turned off. The system relies on backend checks that read the embedded SynthID signal or C2PA data, surfacing provenance information on demand rather than displaying it by default.
Balancing Creative Control Against Transparency Pressure
The move arrives as platforms and regulators wrestle with how to label AI-generated content without hobbling its utility. Europe's AI Act mandates transparency for synthetic media, and several Asian jurisdictions are drafting similar frameworks. Anthropic recently drew criticism for adding visible watermarks to text and files generated by Claude in response to EU compliance requirements, a decision that some enterprise customers found disruptive.
Google's optional watermark sidesteps that tension by keeping the transparency layer intact but out of sight. The company is betting that invisible provenance will satisfy regulators while preserving the polish that professional users demand. Whether that bet holds depends on enforcement appetite and the robustness of invisible watermarking against adversarial removal.
Open-source tooling and adversarial techniques to strip watermarks have proliferated in the past year. Google's decision to open-source Credentio, a new library for embedding local validation mechanisms, suggests the company is preparing developers to build provenance checks directly into apps and workflows. Credentio allows third-party tools to read SynthID and C2PA metadata without relying on Google's servers, distributing the verification infrastructure and reducing single points of failure.
What It Means for Creators and Platforms Across the Region

The open-sourcing of Credentio hints at a future where AI provenance is federated rather than centralized. If developers integrate local validation into photo libraries, content management systems, and social platforms, the invisible watermark becomes a universal check, much like EXIF data in photography. But unlike EXIF, which can be trivially stripped, SynthID and C2PA are designed to resist casual tampering.
The Longer Game on AI Provenance
Google's optional watermark is part of a broader realignment. Visible stamps were always a stopgap, a way to signal caution and compliance while invisible systems matured. Now that SynthID has been deployed across multiple modalities and C2PA has gained industry backing, the company feels confident enough to make the visible layer optional.
The risk is that invisible watermarks become security theater if adversarial actors find reliable ways to remove or corrupt them. The open research community has already demonstrated methods to degrade SynthID's signal in images through compression and noise injection, though Google has continued to harden the system. The race between watermark robustness and removal techniques will shape whether this model of provenance holds.
For now, the shift gives creators more control over their output while preserving a technical layer that platforms and regulators can lean on.
