The Numbers Tell a Transformation Story

In June 2025, AI-generated answers appeared in roughly one out of every seven Google searches. Twelve months later, that figure has nearly tripled to 43%, according to market intelligence firm Similarweb. The shift represents more than an incremental feature rollout; it marks a fundamental change in how the world's dominant search engine positions itself in the information ecosystem.

At DailyTechWire, we've tracked similar platform transformations across Asia and the West, from WeChat's evolution into a super-app to Amazon's journey from retailer to logistics infrastructure. Google's move follows a familiar pattern: a utility becomes a destination, capturing more time and attention within its own walls.

The data from Similarweb shows that AI Mode, Google's conversational search interface, attracted 126 million visits in June 2025. By May 2026, that number had grown to 279 million. Users are no longer just typing keywords and clicking away. They're staying, asking follow-up questions, and treating Google as the endpoint rather than the starting line.

Search Behavior Is Shifting Toward Conversation

The mechanics of how people search are changing alongside the interface. Query length has increased measurably over the past year, suggesting users are adapting their behavior to match the capabilities of AI-driven systems. Instead of typing "weather Tokyo" or "best laptop 2026," searches are becoming fuller sentences, closer to how someone might ask a colleague or assistant.

This behavioral shift has implications beyond user experience. Longer, conversational queries generate different results and different engagement patterns. They're harder to game with traditional SEO tactics, and they tend to keep users within the AI interface longer before they ever see a traditional blue link.

The change also reflects a broader trend we've observed across Asia's tech landscape, where conversational interfaces have gained traction faster than in Western markets. LINE in Japan, KakaoTalk in South Korea, and various super-apps in Southeast Asia have conditioned users to expect natural language interactions. Google's pivot aligns the company with this regional expectation, even as it disrupts established web traffic patterns.

Publishers Face a Traffic Collapse

For content publishers, the rise of AI Overviews represents an existential challenge. When Google synthesizes an answer directly on the results page, the incentive to click through to the original source evaporates. Similarweb reported last year that news publishers were particularly hard hit, and the trend has only accelerated.

Citations within AI-generated responses have increased more than fivefold over the past year, which sounds encouraging until you examine the click-through behavior. Citations don't guarantee traffic. In many cases, users find the AI summary sufficient and never visit the cited source. The publisher receives attribution in name only, with no accompanying audience or ad revenue.

Cloudflare has introduced tools allowing publishers to block AI crawlers unless the companies behind them pay for content access through a marketplace. It's an early attempt to rebalance the value exchange, but the leverage remains heavily tilted toward the platforms. Google, OpenAI, and others control the distribution channels; publishers control individual pieces of content that can often be substituted or paraphrased.

The situation mirrors challenges faced by media organizations across Asia, where platform dominance by Tencent, ByteDance, and others has similarly squeezed independent publishers. The difference is that those platforms at least drive some traffic back to content creators through shares and recommendations. AI Overviews often eliminate that step entirely.

ChatGPT Shows a Different Pattern

While Google's AI integration is reshaping search at scale, ChatGPT presents a more fragmented picture. As of May 2026, just 6.8% of U.S. desktop queries on ChatGPT included citations, despite growth in that metric. The platform's design emphasizes direct answers over source transparency, which raises both trust and attribution concerns.

Certain verticals perform better than others. Travel, retail, and sports queries generate cited responses more frequently, likely because users in those categories are seeking specific, verifiable information like flight times, product specs, or game scores. Abstract or opinion-driven queries are less likely to produce citations, leaving users without a clear path to verify claims or explore further.

However, a May 7 search update from OpenAI appears to have shifted behavior. The proportion of ChatGPT visits that land on external webpages more than doubled, rising from 25% in March 2026 to nearly 60% by the end of May. The update made blue links more prominent within AI-generated responses, and users responded by clicking through at higher rates.

This suggests that interface design still matters. When citations are visible and accessible, a meaningful portion of users will follow them. The question is whether platforms have an incentive to maintain that visibility or whether the gravitational pull toward keeping users on-platform will eventually win out.

The Destination Platform Model Takes Hold

Google's transformation from gateway to destination isn't accidental. It reflects a strategic decision to capture more of the user journey within its own ecosystem. Every minute a user spends in AI Mode or reading an AI Overview is a minute they're not visiting a competitor's site or engaging with a third-party publisher.

This model has proven lucrative for other tech giants. Facebook's Instant Articles, Apple News, and WeChat's Official Accounts all keep users inside walled gardens while offering publishers limited distribution in return. Google's AI Overviews follow the same playbook, with the added advantage that Google already controls the search entry point.

From a product perspective, the shift makes sense. Users get faster answers, Google retains attention and ad inventory, and the company positions itself as the AI leader in a market where OpenAI, Microsoft, and others are competing aggressively. From a web ecosystem perspective, the shift is more troubling. It centralizes information flow, reduces diversity of sources, and undermines the economic model that has funded independent journalism and niche content for two decades.

What Comes Next for Search and the Web

The trajectory is clear: AI-generated answers will continue to expand their footprint in search results. Google has the scale, the data, and the infrastructure to make AI Overviews the default experience for most queries. The question isn't whether this will happen, but how quickly and what guardrails, if any, will emerge to protect the broader web ecosystem.

Regulatory scrutiny is likely, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia where competition authorities have already targeted Google's market dominance. The European Union's Digital Markets Act and similar frameworks in South Korea and India could impose requirements around citation visibility, traffic sharing, or revenue distribution. Whether those measures will be sufficient to rebalance the ecosystem remains uncertain.

Publishers, meanwhile, are exploring alternatives. Some are negotiating direct licensing deals with AI companies. Others are investing in owned platforms, email lists, and membership models that reduce reliance on search traffic. A few are experimenting with AI-resistant content formats, like interactive tools or multimedia experiences that can't easily be summarized in a text snippet.

The web has weathered platform shifts before, from the rise of social media to the dominance of mobile. Each transition reshaped traffic patterns and forced content creators to adapt. This shift feels different in degree, if not in kind. When the search engine itself becomes the answer, the open web risks becoming a data source rather than a destination, invisible to the users it was built to serve.
